In Manny’ Defense

Author: alecto  //  Category: Our News

Since his Blow By Blow days, this writer was already cheering for Manny Pacquiao and expected that someday there will come a time that this tiny and skinny but fiery pugilist will somehow enjoy the fruits of his labor, hard earned though. We are witnesses on his rise to the top. We saw how he demolished many of the legends and future hall of famers like Barrera, Morales, Dela Hoya. I refused to write for a long time regarding the ‘Weathers’ accusation on him of doping maybe because many writers, international and local were already covering the matter and perhaps it’s getting boring. Although most of the boxing fans here and abroad are rooting and believing in Manny, we feel obliged to defend him not just because we used to make t-shirts inspired by him but also as fellow Filipino. For the record, Manny never refused to do blood testing per se but only with regards as to when such testing will be conducted. The Mighty Duck wants it random. Who is he, God? From Day One, Roach stressed that coming into the negotiations with the fight, they would never allow to be pushed and bullied around. It is not Manny who needs this fight more, it is the Mighty Duck. He let approximately $40 million slips his hands in exchange for his unblemished record. What a get away. He just don’t want to fight someone who has a career 38 knockouts. Too risky for him. His handler Oca once said that Pac’s punches did not hurt him. But he had the nerve to quit on his stool. Now he is wondering why Pac’s punches were heavy as Sugar’s. Contradiction at it’s worsts baby! But I honestly believe that the fight’s death has more effect to Mighty Duck in the long run. Manny is already a billionaire here. A respected countryman. A hero. But the Mighty Duck? He will be forever remembered as the greatest ducker of all time. Here are some of the comments posted by different people in different articles I enjoyed most:

1. Let’s just hope that PBF is more scared of the Taxman than the Pacman.

2. Pac’s Ko’s 38. Floydies total wins is 40. Nuff said.

3. A coward dies a thousand deaths.

4. PBF, Pac will fight you even if you take steroids, shabu, marijuana and rugby!

5. Mayweather vs. Hussain Bolt

The Book of Basketball - Bill Simmons

Author: boni  //  Category: Owned

My copy of Bill Simmon’s in depth take and wacky perspective of the NBA finally arrived yesterday. The Book of Basketball The NBA According to The Sports Guy is one thick sanamagan. After reading the book, ill use this as TV Rack.

List price is 30USD but last December I bought this on sale from Amazon.com for about 24$ including shipping. The ship duration is about 3 weeks.

I’ve gone thru some pages (intro, the Isiah Thomas chapter, the Bill - Wilt debate chapter) and the read is entertaining and very promising. This is unprecedented. this could be the first time that I’ll read a book cover to cover. I’ll review my sched, maybe sometime soon I’ll make book review of this NBA review. So that, you can review my review of this NBA review.

But, I’m not great at reviewing a book (in fact I am not great at anything) so I might as well L.E.N.D. this book to one L.U.C.K.Y. colleague at HOOPS.BLINK.PH (the gasping for air Philippine Basketball Blog) and let them read and review this.

Amazon says…

The Book of Basketball is a 700-page work of hoops genius that would make Dr. James Naismith beam proudly – and probably blush. Author Bill Simmons, best known as ESPN.com’s “The Sports Guy,” explores the NBA with hilarious insight, brilliant analysis, and a bevy of irreverent footnotes. Simmons is a fan first – a fact best explained in an entertaining foreword by Malcolm Gladwell – and writes from the stands, not the press room. His knowledge and passion for the game provide him with few peers, yet his voice represents those who stick by their teams through thick and thin. As a result, The Book of Basketball is not just a tribute to hardwood heroes, but also a celebration of yelling at TV sets, revering lucky jerseys, and holding our breath until the final buzzer sounds. Throw in pages of nearly-insane statistical breakdowns (including a projected boxscore from the movie Teen Wolf), and it’s easy to see why fans of all levels should clear shelf space for this instant classic.  –Dave Callanan

Description…

There is only one writer on the planet who possesses enough basketball knowledge and passion to write the definitive book on the NBA.* Bill Simmons, the from-the-womb hoops addict known to millions as ESPN.com’s Sports Guy, is that writer. And The Book of Basketball is that book.

Nowhere in the roundball universe will you find another single volume that covers as much in such depth as this wildly opinionated and thoroughly entertaining look at the past, present, and future of pro basketball.

From the age-old question of who actually won the rivalry between Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain to the one about which team was truly the best of all time, Simmons opens–and then closes, once and for all–every major pro basketball debate. Then he takes it further by completely reevaluating not only how NBA Hall of Fame inductees should be chosen but how the institution must be reshaped from the ground up, the result being the Pyramid: Simmons’s one-of-a-kind, five-level shrine to the ninety-six greatest players in the history of pro basketball. And ultimately he takes fans to the heart of it all, as he uses a conversation with one NBA great to uncover that coveted thing: The Secret of Basketball.

Comprehensive, authoritative, controversial, hilarious, and impossible to put down (even for Celtic-haters), The Book of Basketball offers every hardwood fan a courtside seat beside the game’s finest, funniest, and fiercest chronicler. * More to the point, he’s the only one crazy enough to try to pull it off.

I don’t buy Guess Jeans!

Reason… every so often (meaning Bday and Christmas) I am receiving jeans as gift. And so, even before some pairs turn to longganisang maong, new pairs come up. Then, the old pairs, I give em all to my relatives (about 5 to 6 dudes) during the summers and Christmas season.

Thanks to my sponsors, you know who you are. Mucho gracias. Keep em coming.
